Magyar Bank Charitable Foundation, New Brunswick, recently awarded $37,000 in grants to 11 nonprofits throughout Central New Jersey. South Brunswick Family YMCA, Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick, was a recipient, and the funds were used to assist in the purchase of additional computers and software for its child development center. The awards were distributed based on applications submitted by each organization and how its program addressed the Foundation's objective of providing financial support to nonprofits that focus on improving the quality of life for residents in Central Jersey. Monmouth Junction Singles 35 and older will hold a "mingle" happy hour 4-7 p.m. each Friday The event will feature DJ music by Music Express beginning at 10 p.m., free food and free admission. Hany A. Mawla, North Brunswick, a partner at Greenbaum, Rowe, Smith & Davis, LLP, Woodbridge, has been appointed to serve on the Seton Hall University School of Law dean's diversity council for 2009-01. Mawla will serve with 30 other faculty members, administrators, students and alumni to continue to promote Seton Hall's academic environment. He is a member of Greenbaum's family law practice group and focuses on the litigation of matrimonial, nonmatrimonial and other complex family law related matters.

Gary Cooper of South Brunswick, a public relations and media contact for the New Jersey State Library, received a Gold Award in speechwriting for a Memorial Day speech he gave at American Legion Post 401, Monmouth Junction. The award was presented at the 35th annual Jersey Shore Public Relations & Advertising Association JASPER Awards ceremony in early October at PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel.

The Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA) will hold a sustainability workshop, "Home Energy Rating System (HERS)," 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 5 at Rutgers Center for Green Buildings & NJSSI, Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, 33 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick. The workshop will describe how the HERS rating of a residence is generated, and how it is used to reduce energy use in both new and existing homes.
