No. Bruns. adds solar-powered crosswalk for seniors
As of a few weeks ago, seniors can now manually operate the crosswalk from both sides of Hermann Road to assist them in their safe passage along the busy corridor. Signs warn motorists of the approaching intersection zone, and amber lights flash when the button is pressed, giving seniors about 25 seconds to cross the street. "These types of 'green' initiatives are an integral part of our long-term vision and our master plan, and certainly serve the greater community," said Michael Hritz, the director of Community Development. The crosswalk was funded utilizing $90,000 in grant funding from the state Department of Transportation Trust Fund. By selecting the solar crosswalk option at a bid of only $45,000, the township earned a 50 percent cost savings and is able to earmark the remaining funds for a second crosswalk in another area of town, whose location is to be determined. The bid for an electric crosswalk came in at over $100,000, according to township engineering liaison Scott Kunz. There are also no energy bills or monthly costs to the township. The only potential cost is for the solarpowered batteries, which have a lifespan of five to seven years. "This was a win-win because we were able to construct the crosswalk at half the price and we have no future electric costs," said Councilman Ralph Andrews, who is the chairman of the township's 2030 Committee, which is dedicated to sustainable communities and energy-saving initiatives. The crosswalk is the latest result of the mayor and council's efforts to "go green," which include the purchase of hybrid vehicles and the planned installation of solar panels on the roof of the municipal building. The crosswalk was needed due to the high pedestrian traffic from the senior building to the bus stop across the street and to neighboring shopping centers. "We promised our seniors we would get this done, so I'm pleased to see the project finally finished," council President Cathy Nicola said. "It was imperative that we had this crosswalk installed in order to keep our seniors safe when crossing Hermann Road," Councilman Bob Davis said. And so far, the seniors seem to be appreciative of the assistance in crossing the street. "For the township of North Brunswick, perhaps this will add to our longevity," Rosalyn Robinson said. "I think it's wonderful that North Brunswick Township has looked into trying to improve the quality of life for seniors, and this particular walkway will be extremely helpful through the years," said Jeanne Selby, the manager of the senior building. However, Giesserina Arotin, who is both an avid walker and driver, cautioned drivers to be aware of the crosswalk and to slow down while driving on Hermann Road.
