Boys will be boys at the S.B. Library
'Mr. Matt' leads 'Boys' Club' for tween males

Matt Kirschner
SOUTH BRUNSWICK — The township public library is introducing a new program, the "Boys' Club." The club is designed to target the tween set, boys between the ages of 8 and 12, an often hard-to-reach audience who are too old for story time but too young for teen programs.

Matt Kirschner, 24, of Dayton, known to his patrons as "Mr. Matt," is the first person to lead the "Boys' Club." On July 7, the club held its first meeting, watched the movie "How to Eat Fried Worms," and made and ate "worms in mud."

Kirschner said, "Originally it was a summer program, but it went so well last time that we want to keep it up as long as we can."

Over 36 tween boys attended. "We were surprised," he added. "It was really great."

Children's Librarian Mr. Matt was recently hired by the library but is no stranger to his surroundings, having worked in the library since 1998 as a shelver, later progressing to intern and library assistant. A graduate of Rutgers University with a bachelor's degree in psychology and statistical programming, he recently earned his master's degree in Library Sciences.

The "Boys' Club" will meet again Aug. 18, when the scheduled movie will be "The Ant Bully." The group will make and eat "ants in sand" and "ants on a stump."

For more information on the "Boys' Club," call 732-329-4000, ext. 7285.

The library is located at 110 Kingston Lane, Monmouth Junction.
