Golf outing will support two local scholarships NORTH BRUNSWICK - The public is invited to support two local scholarships by attending the Ann Marie Chandlee - Tara Stout Scholarship Golf Classic on June 30. Over the past seven years, the event has been held in honor of North Brunswick resident Ann Marie Chandlee, a longtime resident who passed away in 2000 at the age of 63 due to complications from cancer. She was the representative to theMiddlesex County Tercentennial Committee in 1983, which established the township's annual Heritage Day celebration. She also helped her husband establish the Adult Drama Group in town, chaired the North Brunswick Dedication Committee, was the president of the town'sWoman's Club, and she volunteered at the Central Jersey Spinal Cord Association. "When you lose somebody like that, who was so involved, you want to feel like they will be remembered forever," former North Brunswick Councilman Bruce Chandlee said of his late wife. This year, the Chandlee family decided to honor a family friend, Tara, who at the age of 10 passed away last September after a two-year battle with leukemia and a bone marrow transplant. She was very good friends with Bruce Chandlee's granddaughter, Jaid. "We were very close," Chandlee said. In the past, a scholarship worth approximately $2,000 had been handed out each year in North Brunswick to a graduating senior pursuing a higher-level education. This year's recipient is Rachel Pearce, who demonstrated the qualities of student academic skills, leadership and community service, Chandlee said. The new component this year, in memory of Tara, will recognize a graduating East Brunswick High School senior who has overcome adversity and has displayed courage in doing so. "We know we can't have a golf outing every year- it's really difficult to keep up this momentum - so we hope to have enough money over the next [10] years to have enough money for both families to hand out scholarships," Chandlee said. The golf event will be held at the Knob Hill Country Club on Route 33 in Manalapan. Registration and lunch will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with tee-off at 1:30. Lunch and dinner will be served, and there will be goodie bags, door prizes, a 50/50 raffle and the chance to win a Ford vehicle for a hole-in-one. Golfers will also receive a golf T-shirt with an emblem of an adult female holding the hand of a young child. The all-inclusive cost is $175 per person. Registration deadline is June 25. Chandlee said sponsorships of a tee box or beverage cart are also welcome, and the sponsors will be recognized during dinner. He also said additional donations will be accepted. Checks can be made payable to Michelle Chandlee-Seel, c/o Golf Classic, and can be mailed to Jeannine MacKinney, 25 Cypress Ave., North Brunswick, NJ 08902. For more information, call Bruce Chandlee at 732-236-0787. "We just want to make this an enjoyable day," Chandlee said. In addition, the North Brunswick Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Services' Heritage Day Committee is accepting nominations for the Ann Marie Chandlee Heritage DayAward. The award is bestowed each year to a resident who has been dedicated to improving the quality of life in the township as a volunteer with a nonprofit group or civic organization for an extended period of time. Submissions must be made in writing by Aug. 15 and include a detailed description of why the nominee is deserving of the honor. Nominations can be submitted to the Heritage Day Committee, 710 Hermann Road, North Brunswick 08902. |
