Best Buy still closed after fire

SOUTH BRUNSWICK - The Best Buy on Route 1 inMonmouth Junction remains closed after an electrical fire May 11.

According to Kingston Fire Chief George Luck, his department was notified of the fire at 1:51 a.m. May 11. The automatic fire alarm had gone off, setting off the sprinkler system.

When the fire department arrived, the police were already there and the fire was raging.

"We saw the smoke coming off the left front corner [of the building]," Luck said. "[The sprinkler system] held it in check, that's for sure."

The firefighters forced their way in through the front door and used a key to get through the roll-up door used for security. The building was full of smoke and they used thermal imaging to locate the source of the fire.

According to Fire Marshal Alan Laird, it was an electrical fire.

"Adisplay case was plugged into an extension cord and the extension cord shorted out," Laird said.

The first-alarm fire drew fire departments from Monmouth Junction, Kendall Park, Plainsboro and Rocky Hill, in addition to Kingston. The Princeton fire department covered Kingston while they were putting out the blaze.
