Zoning board OKs hotel in South Brunswick BY CHRIS MURINO Staff Writer
SOUTH BRUNSWICK - A firm that has been proposing to build a new hotel on the South Brunswick-Monroe border off Interchange Plaza received approval from the Zoning Board of Adjustment on May 1, according to board President Martin Hammer.
Hotel Investors introduced a significantly revised application, as the board was not prepared to approve the previous application because of some variances.
The hotel will now be four stories instead of five and there will be 106 rooms instead of 116. The reduction in stories helped alleviate a need for a height variance.
"They also added certain amenities that they were asking for relief for last time," Hammer said. "They added a small amount of retail space."
In the past, there was some discussion by the board over whether another hotel was needed in the area. However, Hammer said that this was not really an issue because on a conditional use variance, they do not need to prove a need for it. It was the variances that held up the application in the past.
Hammer said the firm still needs to get approval from Monroe before it can build the hotel. The franchise will still be a Hilton. Hammer said they are not required to keep it a Hilton, but that Hotel Investors firmly believed it would be.
