A local physical education teacher has been arrested for sexual assault of a student.

Daniel Kerekes
Daniel Kerekes, 37, a physical education and health teacher at the South Brunswick Township High School, was charged with sexual assault on Saturday for allegedly having sex with a female high school student, according to a press release from the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.

An investigation by the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office Sex Crimes/Child Abuse Unit and the South Brunswick Township Police Department revealed that Kerekes had allegedly been having sex with the student since the fall of 2007. Tim Matheny, the principal of the school, received information regarding Kerekes and contacted police on Friday.

Bail was set at $200,000 after his arrest. As of press time, Kerekes was being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center on Route 130 and Apple Orchard Lane in North Brunswick, in lieu of bail.

Kerekes has been suspended from his duties at the high school, with pay, according to Dr. Gary McCartney, the superintendent of schools.

"He's been charged with a very serious offense, one that betrays the tenets of teaching and making sure students are held in a safe environment," McCartney said, adding that a decision about his employment will be made after he goes through due process.

Kerekes lives in South River and was also the boys lacrosse coach at West Windsor- Plainsboro High School South for the past two years. He has worked at the high school since 1999.
