Gang members plead not guilty to Nov. murder
Former North Brunswick high school student was killed in shooting
BY JENNIFER AMATO Staff Writer

NEW BRUNSWICK - Two Hub City residents held in the November murder of Dyshon Thompson entered not guilty pleas at the Superior Court of New Jersey in New Brunswick on Monday.

Shakiera Summers, of Riverside, and Morgan Brown, of New Brunswick, were arraigned separately on their indictment charges in front of Judge Dennis Nieves.

Both had 12 counts presented against them, which came from a grand jury on March 7: first- degree murder for Thompson's death, second- degree conspiracy to commit murder, first- degree attempted murder for the shooting of Derwin Booker, second- degree possession of a .380 caliber handgun and a rifle for unlawful purposes, third- degree unlawful possession of the handgun without first having obtained a permit, third- degree unlawful possession of the rifle without first having obtained a firearms purchaser identification card, third- degree unlawful possession of a loaded rifle, third- degree unlawful possession of an assault firearm, and fourth- degree unlawful acquisition of the handgun and rifle.

There is also a third- degree charge of terroristic threats against a third victim.

Bail was set at $2 million for each suspect in November.

On Nov. 5 at around 9:13 p.m., Thompson, 24, of New Brunswick, and Booker, 25, of New Brunswick, were shot in the parking lot in front of Building E at 17 Hampton Road in New Brunswick, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.

Thompson was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and was pronounced dead at 11:44 p.m. He was killed by a single gunshot wound from an assault rifle, according to Middlesex County Chief Medical Examiner Andrew Falzone.

The former North Brunswick high school football star had been employed at a candy factory in Somerset, according to the prosecutor's office.

Booker was shot once in the right knee by a handgun. He received treatment for his injuries at the time, which were not life threatening, according to the prosecutor's office.

According to a release from the prosecutor in November, Brown, Summers, Thompson and Booker are all confirmed members of the Bloods gang. The motive is believed to be an internal rivalry between members.

Summers was arrested on Nov. 13 at around 9:30 p.m. and is still at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center.

Brown voluntarily surrendered himself to the New Brunswick Police Department in the early morning hours of Nov. 28. Criminal complaints were signed on Nov. 11. According to Nieves on Monday, his bail status is still set at $2 million.

Because of the gang association, if convicted, the term of incarceration would be 35 years to life for murder, with the possibility of 35 years before parole, according to the prosecutor's office. For any of the other first- degree crimes, 20 years could be served.

Summers' attorney, Mark Anderl, and Brown's attorney,William Fetky, both said in court that they were received a "voluminous" amount of discovery Monday morning, including hundreds of pages of documents, hours of DVDs and audiotapes.

They also cited a plea arrangement from March 13 from the third- party victim, which may implicate both of their clients.

The next court date is scheduled for May 12.
