Top tips for decorating
According to Nicole Lorber of Distinctive Designs by Nicole

• Best Order - Pick out the most expensive and most limiting pieces first. Generally, pick paint last.

• Get inspired - Draw your inspiration from an area rug, a piece of artwork or a fabric that you love. If you don't use a single element as a starting point, decorating your room can be overwhelming because of too many choices.

• Feel/Function - Decide formal or informal. If formal, use more symmetrical styles and accessories (even #s.) If informal, use asymmetricals (odd #s.) If children or family members will use the room, fabrics should be durable. If it is used by adults or on special occasions, fabrics can be more luxurious, such as silks.

• Know color impact - Read up on color theories or get someone to help you. Make sure to test colors and fabrics in your home first.

• Mix it up - Mix patterns, scales and textures, such as stripes with florals, small with large, smooth with plush.

• Repetition - Tie together a theme or colors in your accessories and furnishings.

• Proper proportions - Size of the object relative to the room size.

• Seasonal change - Interchange accessories from season to season. Reversible items are wonderful!

• Finishing touches - Don't depend solely on overhead lighting; lamps give a room a more intimate feel. Accessories complete the room.

• Don't overcrowd your rooms - Sometimes less is more, related to furniture and accessories. Don't have more than two focal points in one room.
