Assemblymen work toward bill for soldiers
Newmeasure guarantees jobs tomilitary personnel after return fromservice

TRENTON- TheAssembly passed legislation last week that is designed to protect enlistedmilitary personnel fromlosing employment when called to serve in the military during a time of war or domestic emergency.

"While American servicemen and women work hard every day to protect us, we owe them the option to return to their jobs when they finish their tours of duty," said Joseph Vas (D-Middlesex), one of the co-sponsors of the bill. "It's the least we can do to thank them for their service."

Under current law, an individual who takes a leave of absence from a civilian job to fulfill their military obligation has certain protections that entitle that individual to return to the former office, position or employment they held when they left. Measure A-3622 would expand those protections by requiring employers to offer a returning employee any position available, for which they are qualified, if the original position was filled in their absence.

"This measure ensures fairness in the workplace for individuals who are bravely serving our country", said co-sponsorUpendra Chivukula (D-Somerset). "They should not be penalized for fulfilling their duty."

"Our veterans shouldn't have to fight for a job they already earned," added co-sponsor Jeff Van Drew (D-Atlantic/Cape May/Cumberland). "The residents of New Jersey should be proud of their dedication to our country."

The bill was released by the Senate Labor Committee 4-0, and the Assembly voted 80-0 to concur with Senate amendments. It now heads to the governor, who may sign it, veto it or modify it in the form of a conditional veto.
