School board vacancy filled

SOUTH BRUNSWICK - Naushad Islam was appointed to the Board of Education on Monday, stepping in to occupy Atilio DeFalco's vacated seat.

"We think he can work with the board to continue our mission of keeping the kids first and working with the best interests of the commission as a whole," board President Martin Abschutz said of the appointment of Islam.

Islam was excited to be a new member of the board.

"It's great, it's a good feeling," Islam said. "It's good to be here; it's a good group of people."

Islam was one of nine residents to undergo public interviews with the board in hopes of being selected for the position. He believes that his having three children in the school district put him over the top.

"I want to be a part of things, to be a part of the district for years to come," Islam said. "The future of the district is tied to my kids. I hope I can promote my ideas and be as successful as other school districts."

During his interview, he focused on his role as a parent and how he can help the parents in this district, as well as the children.

"My goal will always be whatever is best for the parents, and as a parent I have a list of things that will make some parents happy and others unhappy," Islam said.

Board Secretary Anthony Tonzini swore in Islam during the board meeting.
