N.B Woman's Club takes part in convention

Members of the North Brunswick Woman's Club took part in the 113th annual convention of the New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs in early May in Atlantic City.

Twelve members attended the convention, and member Carol Niemiec received Order of the Lily Award, the highest honor awarded for leadership. Betty Schneider was recognized for outstanding efforts, up and above the call of duty, and Thelma Comparato for her work in soliciting new members for the club. Each year, members participate in various workshops, and Cookie Miller received a Grand Prize for floral arrangements in the arts/creative category.

The Club held its installation of new members during May. Installed were Madelyn Diaz, Rose Gebbia, Kris Higgerson, Alice Morris, Jeanne Trainer, Joyce Wolff, Shelley Mango and Charlene Keelan. Thelma Comparato, membership chairperson, received the Woman of Year Award for outstanding work in recruiting new members.

'Time for Two's'

slated at N.B. Library

North Brunswick Public Library, 880 Hermann Road, will begin registration for "Time for Two's" for children age 24-36 months with an adult June 18. The program will be held for six Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. beginning July 5.

The summer reading club for children in grades preschool through five begins June 25. Families are encouraged to join Puzzle Pals, the read-to-me portion of the program for children age 3-5.

The reading program for teens, "DYK," will also be offered and feature weekly prizes, and a grand prize giveaway at the end of the summer. Special events include "Tales From the Unknown," an anime movie night, game night and craft night.

A performance of "Finding King Tut: Mystery History and Humor in Ancient Egypt" for families with children age 3 and older will be June 27 at 7 p.m. The free performance will be given by Duet Productions.

March of Dimes annual golf outing June 19

The March of Dimes will hold its 19th annual golf classic June 19 at Forsgate Country Club, 375 Forsgate Drive, Cranbury.

Registration, lunch and a golf clinic will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. There will also be live and silent auctions, dinner and an awards reception beginning at 6 p.m. The cost is $2,200 for a corporate foursome. Proceeds benefit the March of Dimes' mission to prevent birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality.

'Pig Tales' at New Jersey Museum of Agriculture

New Jersey Museum of Agriculture, 103 College Farm Road, North Brunswick, will present "Pig Tales" June 12 from noon to 3 p.m.

The event will feature Oreo, the pig puppet from the museum's Piggy Puppet theater, crafts, a sniff station, feed grinding demonstrations, and a trip to the animal barns at Cook College.

Admission is $4, $3 for students and seniors, $2 for children age 4-12, and free for museum members and children younger than age 4.

Good Scouts Award reception June 20

Joyce Kilmer District, Central New Jersey Council, Boy Scouts of America will hold a reception for recipients of the fourth annual Good Scouts Award June 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Classical Caterers, Finnegans Lane, North Brunswick.

Award co-recipients are Drs. Clifton R. and Ellen A Lacy. Clifton is immediate past president and chief executive officer of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. Lacy is a licensed psychologist in private practice in the Kendall Park section of South Brunswick.

'Chef's Night' to benefit Elijah's Promise June 11

Elijah's Promise, New Brunswick, will present "Chef's Night" June 11 at 6 p.m. at the New Brunswick Hyatt. Proceeds will benefit the nonprofit and its Promise Jobs Culinary School.

The event will feature 20 stations offering items prepared by chefs from local restaurants such as The Frog and the Peach, Hyatt Regency New Brunswick, Harvest Moon Brewery & Café, Panico's and Fiddleheads. There will also be live music and a silent auction.

Tickets are $125, and $103 from each ticket will benefit Elijah's Promise. The nonprofit operates the New Brunswick Soup Kitchen, social service programs and the Promise Jobs Culinary School, which offers an intensive training program to prepare low-income adults for employment in the dining industry.

Entries accepted for Sept. 11 poetry contest

The North Brunswick September 11 Committee is now accepting entries for its poetry contest for students in grades K-12. Students are asked to write a poem about what Sept. 11 means to them.

The entry deadline is July 12. The winner will read the poem during a memorial ceremony Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. across from 710 Hermann Road.

Open house at DeVry slated for June 9

DeVry University, 630 Route 1, North Brunswick, will hold an open house June 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will feature a wide variety of activities and information, and senior projects completed by DeVry electronics engineering technology, computer information systems, and network and communications management graduates. Faculty and deans from several university programs will also be present, as well as representatives from financial aid, admissions, and career services. Lunch will be provided, and there will be a raffle for prizes such as an iPod, Yankees tickets and gift certificates.

Flag-burning ceremony for worn flags, June 14

North Brunswick will hold a flag-burning ceremony to dispose of flags that are worn and tattered and no longer fit for display, June 14 at 10 a.m. at Veterans Park in commemoration of Flag Day.

'My Best Shot' exhibit opens June 12

The gallery at South Brunswick Municipal Building, Ridge Road, Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick, will feature "My Best Shot" photography exhibit June 12- Aug. 17. An artist's reception will be June 26 at 6:30 p.m.

The exhibit sponsored by the South Brunswick Arts Commission in cooperation with the South Brunswick Camera Club features the works of 14 area photographers. Father's Day fishing derby June 17

North Brunswick Recreation will hold a Father's Day fishing derby for children in preschool through eighth grade June 17 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Boyd Pond off Route 130 south.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m., and prizes will be awarded at 1:30 p.m. Fishing poles and bait will not be provided, but hot dogs and drinks will be sold. Early registration is encouraged.
