Americans should pay tribute on Memorial Day

Monday is Memorial Day. A day set aside by Congress for Americans to reflect and pay tribute to members of the armed forces who made the ultimate sacrifice. Unfortunately, over the years, Memorial Day has become nothing more than a day off work. A day for barbecues, retail stores and auto sales and a day where you don't see many homes flying the American flag.

Towns around New Jersey celebrate the day with parades that are sparsely attended.

It has been decades since our world wars ended. The Korean Conflict is more than 50 years' past. America's involvement in Vietnam ended 32 years ago. Memorial Day is a day we remember those who gave up all their tomorrows so we can enjoy today.

Freedom comes with a terrible price. Certainly it should not be much of a sacrifice for Americans to attend a parade or a ceremony, or simply display our nation's flag outside their home. Without veterans organizations, what would become of Memorial Day? Perhaps the true meaning would face into the past like our wars.
