Kendall Park Scouts place second at Highland Games

Kendall Park Boy Scout Troop 90 and Cub Scout Pack 98 each won second place overall in the troop's respective categories at the 2006 Highland Games in mid October at Thompson Park, Monroe.

Led by Senior Patrol Leader Matt Ruffe, the senior patrol placed first of three senior patrols, while the Tomahawks patrol took third place of 18 patrols. Overall, the patrols earned 17 first-, second-, and third-place ribbons. Pack 98 Webeloes earned five first-, second-, and third-place ribbons and an overall second-place finish.

The Black Hawks, Troop 90s senior patrol, received first place in the events of stone put, lumberjack, caber toss, and last aid; and five second-place ribbons in horseshoes, boiling grog, sheaf toss, comlongon tower and chariot races. The Tomahawks earned three first places in horseshoes, last aid, and chariot races, and a third in sheaf toss. The Silver Foxes earned two first-place awards in lumberjack and sheaf toss, a second-place in stone put, and third in caber toss.

The Long John Silvers patrol from Pack 98 received a second place in caber toss and third in boiling grog. Its Creatures of the Forest patrol placed first in sheaf toss and last aid, and second in quoits. Pack 98 is chartered by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9111 of South Brunswick. Troop 90, sponsored by the Community Presbyterian Church of the Sand Hills section of South Brunswick.

Full-moon walk along D&R Canal Dec. 3

The Delaware & Raritan (D&R) Canal Watch will sponsor an evening walk along the canal towpath Dec. 3 at 7:45 p.m. The walk will begin at the Kingston canal house off Route 27, Kingston section of South Brunswick.

It will be 2.2 miles and if there is a nearly full "cold moon," will be lit by the moon reflecting off the canal and Lake Carnegie. The walk will end. and end at the Millstone River aqueduct (walk canceled if there are cloudy skies). The free walk is open to the public and no reservations are necessary. Register Dec. 5 for

winter rec. programs

South Brunswick Department of Parks & Recreation will hold winter registration for its Creative Learning and Bright Starts programs beginning Dec. 5 from 7-8 p.m. at the South Brunswick Community Center at Woodlot Park, New Road, Kendall Park section of South Brunswick (doors open at 6 p.m.).

Nonresidents may register two days before programs begin, space permitting. The Creative Learning programs are "Yippie I'm 3," "Stepping Stones" and "Fundays." The Bright Starts programs are 45-minute parent-and-tot programs.

Registration format is first come, first served, in-person only (may register only one other family), with a choice of one class (second choice if first class is full). Participants must have a registration form, and a copy of the child's birth certificate must be on file or must accompany the registration form. Creative Learning registrants must have updated medical and data forms completed (all physicals must be recorded on the universal medical form available at the recreation office). The child must meet age requirements before Jan. 19, 2007.

S. Brunswick Camera Club to meet Dec. 6

The South Brunswick Camera Club will hold its next meeting Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. in the meeting room of the South Brunswick Public Library, 110 Kingston Lane, Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick.

Guest will be professional photographer Burt Lipman demonstrating the activity of judging pictures. Individuals are encouraged to bring up to three photos, and Lipman will highlight the positive elements of each and offer constructive suggestions. N. Brunswick Woman's Club craft show Dec. 2

The North Brunswick Woman's Club will host its fifth annual craft and vendor show Dec. 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Our Lady of Peace Church, Route 130. The event will feature approximately 80 vendors, as well as food and baked goods. Proceeds will benefit the North Brunswick Humane Association and scholarship fund. Alzheimer's support meetings to begin Dec. 2

The Alzheimer's Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter, will hold caregiver support meetings beginning Dec. 2 at 10:30 a.m. at JFK Hartwyck Adult Medical Day Center, 2050 Oak Tree Road, Edison.

Holiday music event

at S.B. Library Dec. 2

The Unlimited Potential Theater Company of VSA arts of New Jersey, New Brunswick, will offer a holiday music and theater event Dec. 2 from 1-4:30 p.m. at the South Brunswick Library, 110 Kingston Lane, Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick.

The event will be in two parts. Part one from 1-3 p.m. will be a combination of participatory, creative drama exercises for children and adults. It will include a performance of the VSA musical "Promise of the Park." Following the show, there will be creative drama activities and holiday music.

Part two is for older students and adults, and attendees will take part in the workshop "The Theory of Multiple Intelligence (MI)." Following the workshop, there will be drama and music exercises to demonstrate the MI theory.

North Brunswick Scout attains rank of Eagle

Matthew Ruffe, North Brunswick, a Scout in Troop 90, Kendall Park section of South Brunswick, recently attained the rank of Eagle Scout, the 56 Scout from Troop 90 to attain the rank since the troop's formation in 1962.

To earn the Eagle rank, he completed a public service project for the Farrington Lake Conservation District, North Brunswick. The project included erecting a flag pole, building a flower bed, and installing benches at the lake. Ruffe also raised funds to complete the project.

The son of Kathy and Paul Ruffe, he is a sophomore at North Brunswick High School. Ruffe has advanced through the ranks of Cub Scouts, including the Arrow of Light, and Boy Scouts, and serves as the troop's senior patrol leader. He also participated in the 2005 National Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, Va., and at the high adventure program at Philmont, N.M.

S. Brunswick Scouts adopt family for holiday

St. Augustine's Junior Girl Scout Troop 1244, South Brunswick, adopted a family in need for Thanksgiving and provided groceries for making Thanksgiving dinner.

The troop provided several food items and made food baskets for the family who was "adopted" through the St. Vincent De Paul Society.

Troop members are Claire Padron, Casey Potter, Sarah Elechicon, Emily Baumley, Samantha Orokos, Elisa Buono, Stephanie Perkons, Cristina Canestri, Emma Gordon, Rachel Pastor and Jessica Klimczak.

N. Brunswick WinterFest slated for Dec. 4

North Brunswick Township will host its annual "WinterFest" Dec. 4 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the municipal building at 710 Hermann Road.

The free event will feature pictures with Santa, "reindeer" rides, a tree lighting, singing by the North Brunswick Township High School choir, an appearance by radio station 101.5 FM, and hot chocolate and refreshments. Religious organizations are welcome to place displays on the front lawn.

Donations now accepted at N. B'wick Food Bank

The North Brunswick Food Bank is collecting food for the upcoming holidays with the donation drop off at North Brunswick Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services, 710 Hermann Road.

Needed items are turkeys, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, gravy, green beans, corn, cranberry bread, pie crusts, pumpkin puree, evaporated milk, coffee, pudding and butter. Center to offer trips, talks during December

South Brunswick Senior Center, 540 Ridge Road, Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick, will be open during weekends Dec. 2 and 16 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., and Sundays from 1-4 p.m. (except Dec. 24 and 31).

The center has now added social dancing to the Sunday programming, and one-on-one computer instruction is also available weekends. "Lunch with Karen" will be Dec. 7 at 11:45 a.m., with registration due by Dec. 4. The menu is chicken cordon bleu. To register, call (732) 329-6171.

The South Brunswick Senior Center Office on Aging is sponsoring a chartered trip Dec. 6 from 7:45 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (approximate) to the "Christmas Spectacular" at Radio City Music Hall, New York City (show time 11 a.m.). Seating is the first mezzanine section of the orchestra. Individuals will have time following the show to visit Rockefeller Center or other activities. Cost is $55 for South Brunswick residents age 55 and older and grandchildren.

The South Brunswick Senior Club will sponsor a trip to the "Holiday Spectacular" at the Tropicana, Atlantic City, Dec. 7. The South Brunswick High School Concert Choir will perform a holiday concert Dec. 12 at 12:30 p.m. Prem Rawat will present "Put Happiness First" Dec. 14 at 10:30 a.m. The informative lecture will encourage individuals to rethink priorities. Free local trips will be Dec. 13 to Target, Kohl's and Wegman's, and Dec. 2 to East Brunswick Mall. All trips depart the center at 10:30 a.m. Former radio character actor and announcer Dave Zwengler, the "Man of a Thousand Voices," will present "Static 'N' All" Dec. 14 at 12:30 p.m. He will discuss the golden age of radio.

Sandy Riley will lecture on her personal experience living with the Amish Dec. 21 at 12:30 p.m. Riley, Bricktown, lived in Lancaster, Pa., for 13 years, and worked with a local midwife for five of those years. A New Year's party will be Dec. 28 at noon. The event will feature various foods, hats, noisemakers, live big band dance music decorations, giveaways, and door prizes. Reservations are required.
