Nominations now taken for Heritage Day Award

The Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Services is accepting nominations for the Ann Marie Chandlee Heritage Day Award given annually to a resident dedicated to improving the quality of life in the township as a volunteer with a nonprofit or civic organization for an extended period of time.

Written submissions must include a detailed description of why the nominee is deserving of the honor. The award will be presented at the Heritage Day Festival held Sept. 30. Recreation has announced the Colonial Gardens pocket park has its new swing set installed, with rubber mulch for safety purposes. An aerator has also been installed at the Boyd Ponds off of Independence Avenue on Route 130.

Craft vendors sought for SBHS craft show

South Brunswick Board of Education is seeking vendors for its second annual craft show to benefit South Brunswick High School Project Graduation. The craft show will be held Nov. 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Parent volunteers are also needed for a few hours during the event. Applications from crafters are now being accepted, and all items must be hand-crafted. Proceeds from crafter/vendor spaces will benefit Project Graduation. The show will be held at South Brunswick High School, 750 Ridge Road, Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick.

Pet event, memorial ceremony in N. B'wick

North Brunswick Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Services will hold the third annual "Dog Walk-a-Thon" Sept. 9 at Sabella Park off Cozzens Lane, North Brunswick. on Sept. 9. Registration is at 10 a.m., and the walk at 11 a.m.

Dogs must be 16 weeks of age, licensed, vaccinated and leashed at all times. Entry fee is $12 for the first dog and $5 for each additional dog. A candlelight ceremony in remembrance of Sept. 11 will be held at the memorial on Hermann Road at 7:30 p.m. A block party for the Hidden Lake section of town will be Sept. 16, and for the Renaissance section Oct. 14, both from noon to 2 p.m. All residents are encouraged to meet various department heads and learn about their communities. 'Bon Appetite for the Spirit' Aug. 17 at center

South Brunswick Senior Center is offering "Bon Appetite for the Spirit," Thursdays at 11 a.m. (except first Thursday of each month) at meeting room four at the municipal building, Route 522, Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick.

The group uses various forms of literature as a catalyst to discuss personal issues, thoughts, and concerns with each other. For more information, call Caryl at (732) 329-4000, ext. 7212.

A cantata class for township seniors age 55 and older will be held at the center at the municipal complex. Sessions begin Sept. 19 at 10:30 a.m., and will run for 10 Tuesdays at a fee of $10 (registration opens Sept. 5).

New sessions for the fall are "Drawing with Helen," Oct. 4 at 1 p.m. (registration opens Sept. 12); tai chi, Oct. 12 at 9:30 a.m. for 10 weeks at a fee of $15 (registration opens Sept. 19); a 10-week watercolor class beginning Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. Fee is $20 and registration opens

Mighty Oak to raise

curtain on 'Gypsy'

The Mighty Oak Players will present its production of the musical "Gypsy" at 7 p.m. on Aug. 25, 2 and 7 p.m. on Aug. 26, and 2 p.m. on Aug. 27 at the Richard P. Marasco Performing Arts Center at Monroe Township High School, Perrineville Road.

Show director is Jeff Babey. Musical director is Jennifer Alagna.

Program on history

of D&R Canal Aug. 19

Delaware and Raritan (D&R) Canal State Park will present a PowerPoint presentation on the history of the canal Aug. 19 at 1:30 p.m. at the park's education building at 145 Mapleton Road, Kingston section of South Brunswick. The hourlong program will feature historic and modern photographs will be included to highlight the waterway's past and present life. The program is free, and registration is not required. Fundraiser at restaurant for S.B. resident Aug. 24

Champps Americana Restaurant, Menlo Park Mall, will hold a fundraiser all day Aug. 24 and donate 10 percent of its food proceeds to the Roxanne Guzman Benefit. Guzman is a South Brunswick resident injured in a car accident in South Brunswick last November. The East Brunswick Elks will also hold a spaghetti dinner fundraiser Oct. 15. Phone card collection under way in S. B'wick

Sen. Peter Inverso (R-14) and Assemblyman Bill Baroni (R-14) will work with the New Jersey National Guard collecting pre-paid phone cards through Sept. 8. Submissions due Sept. 1 for UPTCo play forum

The Unlimited Potential Theater Company (UPTCo) of VSA arts of New Jersey, New Brunswick, is seeking original unpublished plays for the "Work in Process Forum" Nov. 18 and 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at North Brunswick Township High School, Raider Road.

Deadline for submissions is Sept. 1. Through the forum, UPTCo will provide opportunities for participants to share and develop new plays in an environment where participants may edit, revise, workshop and produce work. Three submissions will be chosen for staged readings during the forum, and one will be workshopped the following year for production.
