N.B. board ignored questions on start-up costs for high school

I noted with interest the comment in Jennifer Amato's article ("35-cent tax hike proposed in N.B.," March 30), "However, it is unclear if the voters anticipated the extra costs." Well, please take note I sent an e-mail to the board before the bond vote for the high school addition and asked specifically what the anticipated start-up and ongoing costs would be. I didn't even get the courtesy of a response! And, they got a "no" vote - not that it mattered.

There are two kinds of lies: the kind you say, and the kind you don't say. Shame on you, North Brunswick "bored" of education.

South Brunswick urged to vote in favor of school budget

I am writing this letter to encourage everyone to vote yes on the school budget. Our children's education is important because they are the future leaders of our country. We want them to be well educated and prepared for the future.

The district faced many uncontrollable factors when building this budget, including a reduction in state aid while the number of students entering our school system has increased to 9,017. Restrictions were also imposed by the state budget cap and in increases in items such as utility costs and salaries and benefits for more than 1,300 employees.

This budget protects and preserves academic programs and support services for all our students. It provides for the necessary textbooks and related resources to implement the district's new math curriculum as well as move forward with the classroom technology initiatives.

Although no one welcomes a tax increase, I plan to support the budget and encourage other South Brunswick voters to do the same. Vote yes on April 18.

Elect Nathanson, Long to South Brunswick school board

In the next two weeks, South Brunswick voters will decide who will represent our residents, and more importantly, our students on the Board of Education. Having served for three years, I believe I have some insight into what makes a good board member. It takes a commitment of time and a commitment to residents as well as students.

Barry Nathanson has already served three years on the board. He showed his mettle during times when tough decisions had to be made. Few can rival his knowledge of athletics or facilities in our system. With two children in our schools, Mr. Nathanson will continue to strive for continued improvements.

Bob Long has served more than 10 years on the board. He served for two years as president and is currently chairman of the budget committee. He also has two children in our schools.

I am proud to endorse both Barry Nathanson and Bob Long for the South Brunswick School Board.
