‘Pass the Tiki’ to open Feb. 17 in N. Brunswick

Local artist and former North Brunswick Department of Parks & Recreation Artist of the Month Tony Squindo will hold an art show opening Feb. 17 at 8:30 p.m.

“Pass the Tiki” will feature his designs for bands such as Metallica, The Ramones and Korn. His first solo show will run through March at Coffee Blue, Belmar. The September 11 Committee is holding a T-shirt-designing contest through Feb. 28 for children in grades K-12 to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks. The theme is “Remember, Reflect and Recover,” and the dates “9/11/01-9/11/06” should be included in the design. Artwork will be collected in each township school, at the municipal building front desk or at Recreation at 710 Hermann Road.

The Adult Drama Group will present “Evita,” March 9-11 at the North Brunswick Township High School, 30 Raider Road. Tickets are $10, and $5 for senior citizens and children younger than age 12. “Friday Night Recreation” for children in grades K-6 is under way at Linwood Middle School, 25 Linwood Place from 6:30-9 p.m. through March 3. Cost is $5 per visit. The teen basketball league is open to recreational players in grades nine-12 Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. at Linwood. The North Brunswick Democratic Organization is seeking registered Democrats interested in running for two Township Council seats. Meditation, yoga offered at S. Brunswick Library

South Brunswick Public Library has announced the formation of the mindfulness meditation group which will meet the first and third Wednesday of each month.

The group will practice meditation in various forms, and have light reading and discussions. Spring yoga classes for beginners and intermediates begin March 2 at 7 p.m. and will run for six weeks. Cost is $55, and attendees should wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat. Citizenship classes will run for six weeks from 10:30 a.m.-noon Saturdays beginning March 4. The course is free and an intermediate level of English is required. Registration is required for yoga and this class.

The adult book discussion group will meet March 6 at 7:30 p.m. to discuss “Snow” by Orhan Pamuk. The rest of the schedule will be “Fighting for America” by Christopher Moore April 3, “Saturday” by Ian McEwan May 1, “Nickel and Dimed” by Barbara Ehrenreich June 5, “Washington Square” by Henry James July 3, “Mansfield Park” by Jane Austen Aug. 7, “Middlesex” by Jeffrey Eugenides Sept. 11, “Brick Lane” by Monica Ali Nov. 6, and “Tender Bar: A Memoir” by J.R. Princeton AARP Chapter to meet Feb. 17

The Princeton Chapter AARP No. 459 will meet Feb. 17 at 1:30 p.m. at Kingston Presbyterian Church, 4565 Main St., Kingston section of South Brunswick.

The group will celebrate Heart Healthy Month, and members are urged to wear red.

Speaker will be Geri Kapiscak, nurse manager of the heart and pulmonary rehabilitation department at University Medical Center at Princeton. She will discuss “Steps to Maintaining a Healthy Heart.”

Works by local artist at library during February

North Brunswick Public Library, 880 Hermann Road, is displaying works by Denise Celi, Highland Park, during the month of February.

Her works consist mostly of modern art done in acrylics.

‘Woolly Winter’ at North B’wick museum Feb. 20

New Jersey Museum of Agriculture, 103 College Farm Road, North Brunswick, will present “Woolly Winter” Feb. 20 from noon to 2 p.m.

Attendees are encouraged to wear a knitted sweater, mittens or hat to the event, which will feature a guided tour of the Cook College sheep barn, spinning wheel demonstration, bracelet or bookmark craft project, and sheep-shearing video. Hot cocoa will be served.

“Maple Sugaring” will be Feb. 26 from noon to 3 p.m. Historian Gail Trautz will give a lecture on the history of maple sugaring, and there will be a tree tapping demonstration (weather permitting). There will also be a demonstration of maple syrup boiling, samples of pancakes and other foods with maple syrup, and a maple leaf craft project for children.

Admission is $4, $3 for seniors, $2 for children age 4-12, and free for museum members and children age 3 and younger. For more information, call the museum at (732) 249-2077.

Financial aid hotline available Feb. 19-24

Rutgers University, New Brunswick, will offer a hotline offering financial aid advice to families of high school students Feb. 19 from 4-7 p.m., and Feb. 20-24 from 6-9 p.m. The free hotline number is 866-261-2674.

The hotline will be offered during Financial Aid Awareness Month in February. It is sponsored by the New Jersey Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators Inc., and will be staffed by financial aid officers.

No change in garbage pickup on Presidents Day

South Brunswick Township has announced there will be no interruption in garbage or recycling collection in the Township on Presidents Day, Feb. 20. Tickets now available for VFW St. Patrick’s event

Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post No. 9111 and its Ladies and Men’s Auxiliaries will host a St. Patrick’s Day dinner-dance March 11 beginning at 8 p.m. at the Post home at 11 Henderson Road, Kendall Park section of South Brunswick.

South Brunswick Scouts selling ads for fundraiser

South Brunswick Boy Scout Troop 888 is selling place mat ads for its pancake breakfast fundraiser March 12 from 8 a.m. to noon.

The Troop is seeking corporate sponsors for the ads priced at $35 for a two-by-two inch ad, and $70 for a two-by-four inch ad. ‘Citizens’ Campaign’ slated at library Feb. 23

The Friends of the North Brunswick Public Library are sponsoring a “Citizens’ Campaign” Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. at North Brunswick Township Library, 880 Hermann Road.

Attendees will receive free training and learn techniques to enact important reforms in the resident’s hometown, and advocate for issues important to the individual. Attendees will also receive a free copy of “A Citizens’ Manual: Paths to Power for Regular Citizens” by Harry S. Pozycki.
