Community Bulletin Board The South Brunswick Commission on Women has announced applications are now available and will be accepted through Feb. 10 at 2:30 p.m. for the 2006 Community Service Award. The award honors efforts and contributions of women to the South Brunswick community. Two scholarships will be awarded Feb. 25 at the Women’s Leadership Conference at South Brunswick High School. Talk on ‘Subarctic New Jersey’ Feb. 9 The Kingston Greenways Association will host the talk “Subarctic New Jersey: An Antithesis to Global Warming” Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Laurel Avenue School, Laurel Avenue and Union Street, Kingston section of South Brunswick. The free talk will be given by Mark Demitroff. Demitroff is a certified tree expert, and also explores southern New Jersey for evidence of Pleistocene phenomena in the terrain of the Pine Barrens. Tickets now available for mid-winter dance The Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Unit 401 will hold a mid-winter dance Feb. 11 from 8 p.m. to midnight at the legion at 148 Major Road, Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick. Tickets are $12 per person at the door, and $10 in advance. The dance will feature hors d’oeuvres, and music by Soundz Good Entertainment. Individuals must be age 21 or older to attend. Joint communion service at church Feb. 12 Christ the King Lutheran Church, 3330 Route 27, Kendall Park section of South Brunswick, will hold a joint Methodist-Lutheran service of Holy Communion Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. The service is to commemorate The United Methodist Church and Evangelical Lutheran Church in America entering into a new relationship leading to full communion. Call the church at (732) 297-1200. ‘Raise Our Voices Concert for Israel’ Feb. 26 The Jewish community relations council of the Jewish Federation of Greater Middlesex County will present the fourth annual “Raise Our Voices Concert for Israel” Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. at Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple, 222 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick. The concert will feature members of Anshe Emeth; Congregation B’nai Tikvah, North Brunswick; Temple B’nai Shalom, East Brunswick; Neve Shalom, Metuchen; Temple Emanu-El, Edison; Congregation Etz Chaim, Monroe; Highland Park Minyan; Highland Park Conservative Temple; and Jewish Congregation of Concordia. The show will also feature Anshe Emeth’s junior choir. Proceeds benefit Operation Promise providing care for the Ethiopian Jewish and former Soviet Union communities. General admission is $25. River temple Congregation Anshe Emeth, 88 Main St., South River, will hold its annual blood drive from 2:30-8 p.m. on Feb. 20, Presidents Day. Individuals ages 17-75 are eligible to donate; those over age 75 must have a doctor’s note; those under age 18 need a parent’s written permission. Donors must be in good health, weigh at least 110 pounds and have had no exposure to hepatitis. Individuals who donated blood after Dec. 31 are not eligible. All donors must bring identification. Individuals need not be temple members to donate. The public is welcome to attend, and a coffee hour will follow the later service. The church recently elected Jeff Flick, Dayton section of South Brunswick, and Barbara Sanfilippo, Kendall Park section of South Brunswick, to the top two lay offices at the church. Library slates stories, crafts, book swap, more The children’s department at the North Brunswick Public Library, 880 Hermann Road, will host two programs for Valentine’s Day, beginning with stories and a craft program for children ages 3-5 at 11 a.m. Feb. 10. And, a craft and cookie-creating program for children ages 5-10 will be held Feb. 14 at 4 p.m. The Kids News Club for aspiring writers in grades three, four and five will hold its next meeting Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. In honor of Black History Month, the group will discuss “The Watsons Go to Birmingham: 1963” by Christopher Paul Curtis. A children’s book swap for ages 5-14 will be held Feb. 18 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Children may bring books from home to trade for a different book to read. Masonic Temple to host stroke screenings Feb. 16 Masonic Temple Union Lodge No. 19, 40 Cedar Ave., North Brunswick, will offer stroke screenings performed by Life Line Screening Radiology Feb. 16 beginning at 9 a.m. The screenings use ultrasound technology to scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries which can lead to a stroke or aortic aneurysms. Bone density screenings to assess risk for osteoporosis will also be offered. Either screening requires 10 minutes or less to complete. Preregistration is required. No. Brunswick daffodil sale to end Feb. 15 The North Brunswick Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Services is selling daffodils through Feb. 15 to benefit the American Cancer Society. The Adult Drama Group will present its 36th annual performance, “Evita,” March 9-11 at the North Brunswick Township High School Commons, 30 Raider Road. Tickets are $10, and $5 for senior citizens and children younger than age 12. “Friday Night Recreation” for children in grades K-6 is under way at Linwood Middle School, 25 Linwood Place from 6:30-9 p.m. through March 3. Kendall Park Auxiliary rose sale begins Feb. 12 The Kendall Park Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary will hold a Valentine’s Day rose sale fundraiser Feb. 12 and 13 from 3-7 p.m. and Feb. 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Kendall Park Firehouse, New Road, Kendall Park section of South Brunswick.
