Registration begins at 9 a.m. The chapter’s goal is to raise $315,000 for research to find a cure for diabetes and its complications. Children and adults are encouraged to come in costume. Workshops for parents of young adolescents Linwood Middle School, Linwood Place, North Brunswick, will offer the “Every Person Influences Children” (EPIC) workshop series 7-9 p.m. Mondays, Nov. 14-Dec. 19. Registration is due by Oct. 31. The free workshop series is for North Brunswick residents who are parents of children in grades six through nine. The workshops will offer hands-on techniques for parenting adolescents, new ways to “tune-in” and respond to young adolescents, and other topics. Other parents will also offer ideas and support. The seventh annual “Care-to-Walk/Run” in support for women with breast or ovarian cancer will be held Oct. 30 at the North Brunswick High School football field, Raider Road. The South Brunswick Senior Center, Office on Aging will hold its annual Volunteer Recognition Day, with the theme “Volunteers Take Time to Care,” Dec. 2 from 4-6 p.m. Reservations must be made by Nov. 25. Residents who have volunteered at the senior center during 2005 are welcome to attend, and should pick up an invitation at the center. Hidden Gems to perform fund-raiser Oct. 29
Hidden Gems, a South Brunswick-based group of 15 Indian male and female singers, will perform a fundraiser for Katrina disaster relief Oct. 29 from 1-3 p.m. The event will be at South Brunswick Senior Center, 540 Ridge Road, Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick. The performance is a variety show, which will include Hindi movie songs on tracks, as well as dances. Requested minimum donation is $50 for four passes to the show, with proceeds donated to either the American Red Cross, CARES or UNICEF. Painting exhibit at senior center Nov. 1
South Brunswick Senior Center will display paintings by New Jersey artist Antonia Germanos Nov. 1-Dec. 31. The works are a series of abstract landscapes, mostly oil on canvas. The sixth annual “Rutgers New Jersey Jewish Film Festival” will run Nov. 10-20 at Regal Cinema Commerce Center, 2399 Route 1 south, North Brunswick. Most screenings include a discussion by film directors or noted experts in various aspects of the Jewish experience. The festival is sponsored by Rutgers’ Allen and Joan Bildner Center for the Study of Jewish Life. It opens with a reception Nov. 10 at 6 p.m., followed by the screening of “Watermarks” at 7:30 p.m. A matinee will be Nov. 13 at 1:30 p.m. The film is about the female swimmers of Hakoah Vienna, a Jewish sports club founded in 1909. Greta Stanton, a diver with the former club and professor emeritus at Rutgers, will speak at both screenings. The Israeli film “Ushpizin” will make its New Jersey premiere Nov. 12 at 8 p.m., with another showing Nov. 13 at 4:45 p.m. It explores the life of a childless Orthodox couple. “Syrian Bride” will also make its New Jersey debut Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m., with another screening Nov. 20 at 3:45 p.m. It shows the dilemmas confronting the Druze community between Syria and the Golan Heights. “Another Road Home” will be shown Nov. 17 at 8:15 p.m. and Nov. 20 at 1 p.m. Other screenings include “Rosenstrasse” Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m., “Unzere Kinder (Our Children)” Nov. 15 at 1 p.m., and “Paper Clips” and “Sister Rose’s Passion,” both shown Nov. 15 at 4:30 p.m., and Nov. 17 at noon. The festival ends with a dinner and screening of “Alles Auf Zucker (Go for Zucker)” Nov. 17 at 6 p.m., and with the festival’s closing dinner Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $9, or $6 for students and senior citizens. Trips, memorial offered by senior center
The South Brunswick Office on Aging will sponsor a trip to see “Chicago” March 30 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), Newark. Ticket sales begin Nov. 1, and price is $37 for bus transportation and show. A trip to “The King and I” will be Nov. 10, with price $32. Both trips are open to South Brunswick residents age 55 and older. Buses for both trips will depart Woodlot Park, New Road, Kendall Park section of South Brunswick, at 10:30 a.m. and return at 5 p.m. (approximate). Show times are 1:30 p.m. The South Brunswick Senior Center will offer three free trips during November, beginning Nov. 2 with a trip to Kohl’s, Wegmans and Target. A trip to Delicious Orchards will be Nov. 16, and Hometown Buffet & Farm Market Nov. 23. All trips are open to township seniors age 55 and older and depart at 10:30 a.m. from the senior center at 540 Ridge Road, Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick. Signup is required. The Lawrence Brook Watershed Partnership (LBWP) will hold a nature walk Oct. 30 from 1-4 p.m. at Pigeon Swamp State Park, South Brunswick. The two to three mile walk will begin at the Habiak Farm, Deans Rhode Hall Road, South Brunswick. Walkers should arrive by 12:45 p.m. The walk will travel around the park’s forests, wetlands, and ponds. Attendees should wear long-sleeved clothing and appropriate boots. The South Brunswick Viking Athletic Club will host its first Vikings 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run Oct. 30 at South Brunswick High School, 750 Ridge Road, Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick. Registration will be held at 7:30 a.m., the mile race will start at 9:30 a.m. and the 5K will begin at 10 a.m. The course will take runners through residential streets around the Welcome Farms development. The entry fee is $20 for the 5K and $15 for the mile. All preregistered runners receive a long-sleeve T-shirt. Proceeds will benefit the high school’s student athletes and marching band.
