North Brunswick Recreation has announced that sponsorship is still available for the Sept. 11 ceremony to be held Sept. 11 at noon at the memorial site on Hermann Road (in the event of rain, the ceremony will be moved to the municipal courtroom).

The North Brunswick Arts and Humanities Committee will hold a farmer’s market Sept. 17 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Babbage Park (rain date is Sept. 18). Vendor spaces are $20 each, and admission to the event is free.

Registration is under way for the Senior Olympics, scheduled for Sept. 30.

The 23rd annual Heritage Day Festival will be held Oct. 1 (rain date, Oct. 2) from noon to 5 p.m. at Babbage Park. The event will feature food, music, ethnic dance troupes, face painting, pony rides, carriage rides, a petting zoo and fireworks. There also will be a performance by Beatlemania at 7 p.m. at the North Brunswick Township High School stadium. Crafters, vendors and local organizations may also participate. Nominations for the Heritage Award are being accepted. The award is presented each year to a township resident who has improved the quality of life in North Brunswick as a volunteer with a nonprofit group or civic organization for an extended period of time. Submissions must be made in writing and include a detailed description of why the nominee is deserving of the honor. Specific information regarding the nominee’s involvement in the community must be included. Nominations should be submitted to the Heritage Day Committee, 710 Hermann Road, North Brunswick 08902.

The Recreation Fall and Winter Activity Schedule is available at www.northbrunswickonline.com. Trips offered this season include a QVC studio tour and King of Prussia Mall trip Oct. 22, a trip to Radio City’s “Christmas Spectacular” in New York City Dec. 3, and a trip to Atlantic City Feb. 3.

“Crafty Kids” will be offered once a month from October through February. Children in grades K-3 will make seasonal crafts. For adults, there will be “Introduction to Oil Paining,” scrapbooking, Pilates, and a women’s softball league. Mail-in registration will be available Sept. 1, and in-person registration will begin Sept. 21.

VFW No. 9111 ‘First Sunday Breakfast’ Sept. 4

Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post No. 9111 will host its “First Sunday Breakfast” Sept. 4 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Post home, 11 Henderson Road, Kendall Park section of South Brunswick. Donation is $5 and the menu will include various breakfast items, and takeout.

‘Welcome Back’ opens Sept. 1 at Mason Gross

Mason Gross School of the Arts has announced its fall lineup scheduled at its gallery at Civic Square, 33 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick.

A “Welcome Back” show will be Sept. 1-30, with a reception Sept. 1 from 4-7 p.m. “Time in New Brunswick” will be Sept. 1-30, with a reception Sept. 8 from 4-7 p.m. Show hours are Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. “Time” consists of 120 photographs detailing the City of New Brunswick.

Shakespeare’s “Troilus and Cressida” will be performed by Mason Gross students Sept. 6-11. General admission tickets are $10 for general public, Rutgers alumni and employees, and seniors, and $5 for students. The Trisha Brown Dance Company will present “Present Tense (2003)” Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20, $15 for Rutgers alumni, employees and seniors, and $10 for students. Both are at the New Theater, 85 George St., New Brunswick.

A free concert at Kirkpatrick Chapel, 81 Somerset St., New Brunswick, will be Sept. 23 at noon. Attendees may bring a brown-bag lunch. A “Jazz Concert for Peace” will be Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. at Nicholas Music Center, 85 George St., New Brunswick, and feature the jazz faculty of Mason Gross. Tickets are $15, with partial proceeds benefiting UNICEF.

Board asks public to use alternate phone number

The South Brunswick Board of Education has announced due to a longer-than-anticipated transition of phone service to its new facility, it is asking residents needing to reach the administrative offices or community education to call (732) 398-5063.

The alternate phone number being used will serve as a temporary way for residents to reach the offices, and once the telephone transfer is complete, residents will be notified. The Board’s new facility will be at Black Horse Lane.

Store to host free car seat safety checks Sept. 8

The North Brunswick Babies “R” Us store, located at 909 Route 1 south is partnering with the local Safe Kids to offer free safety checks to help provide parents with the information they need for proper car seat installation. On Sept. 8 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., parents can have their children’s car seats checked by trained inspectors.

Car seats will be examined by safety specialists for proper installation, age/size appropriateness and to see if they have been recalled or visibly damaged. For more information, call (732) 220-1900.

‘Wild Party’ auditions on tap for Sept. 6 and 7

The Cabaret Theatre at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, will hold auditions for Andrew Lippa’s version of “The Wild Party” at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 6 and 7 at the theater, corner of Nichol Avenue and Suydam Street, New Brunswick. Callbacks are set for 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 8.

Participants should prepare 16 bars of an up-tempo song and be prepared to dance. An accompanist will be provided.

The show, which will be the first production in the theater group’s 30th anniversary season, will be directed by Christopher J. Guell, musically directed by Andre Baldasserini, choreographed by Alisson Canavara and produced by Mel J. Sullivan.

“The Wild Party” features mature themes. All auditioners should be at least 18 years of age.

It’s for You NJ 9/11 memorial Sept. 10

It’s for You NJ 9/11 will commemorate the fourth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks Sept. 10 from 10 a.m. to

2 p.m. at UMDNJ-University Behavioral HealthCare, 151 Centennial Ave., Piscataway. It’s For You NJ 9/11 offers free counseling, community education sessions and information and resources for New Jersey residents affected by the events of 9/11.

The free event will feature stories from a panel of New Jersey residents: John Gorman, a direct survivor and brother of a fallen Port Authority police officer; Leslie Hunt, former chief information officer for the American Red Cross; Susan Picarro, wife of a 9/11 victim, and insurance executive Ludwig Picarro; Martin Viegas, a former lieutenant, New York City Sheriff’s Office, 9/11 search and recovery; and Elia Zedeno, a direct survivor of both 9/11 and 1993 terrorist bombings. Irish guitarist Seamus Kelleher will also perform.

CJJA meeting, award ceremony Sept. 7

To celebrate its third anniversary, the Central Jersey Jazz Association (CJJA) will nominate jazz musicians to its Hall of Jazz, and will hold an award ceremony at its next meeting Sept. 7 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the North Brunswick Government & Community Complex, 710 Hermann Road.

A category recognizing business or educational efforts towards the jazz community has been added, and the first award will be presented to Dan Morgenstern, director of The Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies, Newark, for efforts in the promotion of jazz. Donation to attend is $6, and members are asked to bring a dessert or beverage item.
