Registration open for seniors’ trip to racetrack

South Brunswick Office on Aging is sponsoring a trip to Monmouth Park Racetrack, Oceanport, Aug. 4. The bus will depart Woodlot Park, New Road, Kendall Park section of South Brunswick at 10:30 a.m., and depart the racetrack at 3:30 p.m. The first race is 12:55 p.m. Grandstand admission is $2 for seniors age 55 and older, and bus fare is $3 (payable at registration). Registration is now open for South Brunswick residents and may be done at South Brunswick Senior Center, Route 522, Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick, or by (732) 329-4000, ext. 7670.

Gospel meeting at South B’wick church July 24

Fresh Ponds Chapel, Fresh Ponds and Davidson’s Mill Roads, South Brunswick, will hold a gospel meeting with guest speakers July 24. The service will be at 7:30 p.m. Guest speakers will be the Rev. Walter and Mrs. Robin Kaptain of United Church of Johnson, Vermont. Both served with the Gospel Mission Corps in New Jersey and relocated to Vermont two years ago. Call (732) 297-3008.

SRHS classes of ’74, ’75 to celebrate at reunion

The South River High School (SRHS) classes of 1974 and 1975 will hold a reunion on Oct. 22 at the Holiday Inn, Jamesburg. The reunion will coincide with SRHS Homecoming Weekend.

Sayreville War Memorial High School (SWMHS) class of 1970 will hold a reunion on Sept. 10 at the Hilton Garden Inn, Edison.

Area residents to star in ‘Wiz’ beginning July 29

The nonprofit Villagers Theatre, 415 Demott Lane, Somerset, will present its annual “TeensVill” production of “The Wiz” July 29-Aug. 14. Performances will be Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m.

The production is being produced by Donna Kimberlin, and choreographed by Jaime Kimberlin, both North Brunswick. Local residents on the student production team are Jessica Staggard, Iselin, dance captain, and Christina Clarke, South River, stage manager. Tyler Picone, South River, is the local technical crew member.

The title role of the Wiz is played by Ryan Aiello, Metuchen. Locals starring in the play are Jared Picone, South River, as the scarecrow; and Jillian Kimberlin, North Brunswick, as Addaperle. Local dancers are Alycia Silber and Jessica Staggard, Iselin; R.J. Keuhner, South Brunswick; and Vincent Orabona, Manalapan. Tickets are $16. For reservations, call the box office at (732) 873-2710. Blood drive at B’nai Tikvah slated for July 31

Congregation B’nai Tikvah, 1000 Finnegans Lane, North Brunswick, will sponsor a blood donor drive for the Blood Center of New Jersey July 31 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Donors 17 and older are eligible, and must be in good general health, and weigh at least 110 pounds.

Donors should bring an ID with signature, and the donor’s Social Security number is also required.

The donation process takes approximately one hour.

Kingston church to hold blueberry festival July 23

Kingston Presbyterian Church, 4565 Route 27, Kingston section of South Brunswick, will hold its annual blueberry festival July 23 from 6-8 p.m. The public is welcome to the free event.

South Brunswick artists exhibit July 24

The South Brunswick Arts Commission will host an exhibit by South Brunswick artists July 24 from 1-5 p.m. at Wetherill Historic Site, 269 Georges Road, Dayton section of South Brunswick. The exhibit is also open weekdays by appointment.

Artists of all ages and experience may bring materials and take part in afternoon of drawing or painting at Wetherill. Visitors may also observe and ask questions.

Ribbon-cutting at Rutgers extension July 28

Middlesex County’s Department of Rutgers Cooperative Research & Extension will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony July 28 at 4 p.m. at the new facility at Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, South Brunswick.

The Extension office is part of a nationwide network that brings the research of the state land-grant universities to local residents often for free or a minimal charge. Offices are funded by the County Board of Chosen Freeholders, Rutgers University-New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Program areas include the agricultural department, the 4-H department, and expanded food and nutrition educational program department.

Pig roast at VFW No. 9111 slated for July 31

Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post. No. 9111 will host a pig roast July 31 at 1 p.m. at the Post home at 11 Henderson Road, Kendall Park section of South Brunswick.

Donation is $20, $5 for individuals age 12-18, and free for children younger than age 11. The menu will consist of roast pork, hot dogs, burgers, corn on the cob, beer and soda. The Indianburn Band will provide live music.

in ‘Annie’ July 22-24

Saint Genesius Players will present “Annie” July 22-and 23 at 8 p.m., and July 24 at 3 p.m. at Spotswood High School, Summerhill Road.

Starring in the title role will be Samantha Satnick, Kendall Park section of South Brunswick. The event is in conjunction with the Janet Caruso Foundation and The Dance Carousel. Tickets are available at the door.

‘Battle of the Bands’ in No. Brunswick July 22

The North Brunswick Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Services will present “Battle of the Bands” July 22 from 6-11 p.m. at Linwood Middle School, Linwood Place. No X-rated music will be allowed. Admission is $5 and the winner will play at Heritage Day in September.

The North Brunswick Planning Board will hold a special Master Plan meeting July 26 at 7 p.m. at the municipal courtroom, 710 Hermann Road. Six property owners and interested developers will give presentations on ideas for redevelopment scenarios. Public input regarding the development ideas, and issues concerning traffic, land use, open space and public facilities will be held until Aug. 3, and 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the municipal courtroom. Meetings will also be televised on Cable Channel 22.

The North Brunswick Police Department will hold National Night Out Aug. 2 from 6-9 p.m. at the North Brunswick Government and Community Complex, 710 Hermann Road. Activities include public safety tips, child photo ID kits, refreshments and live entertainment. The event is free. There will also be a blood drive from 3:30-7 p.m.

The summer concert series will continue with The Roadies Aug. 3, Party of Five Aug. 10, and The Rocketmen Aug. 16. All concerts are at 7 p.m. at Babbage Park. The farmer’s market has been postponed until Sept. 17 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. at Babbage Park (rain date Sept. 18). Vendor spaces are $20 each, and the event is free.
