S. B’wick High School graduation June 21

South Brunswick Board of Education has announced the class of 2005 at South Brunswick High School will have its graduation ceremony June 21 at 3 p.m. at Sovereign Bank Arena, Trenton.

The class of 560 will be led by valedictorian Prasad Tare, and salutatorian Payal Patel.

Key speakers will be Timothy Matheney, high school principal, and superintendent, Gary P. McCartney. Diplomas will be distributed by Bryan Laurita, South Brunswick Board of Education president.

Watershed Partnership to meet June 21

The Lawrence Brook Watershed Partnership will hold an open meeting for interested area residents and current members June 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the South Brunswick Township Municipal Building, Ridge Road, Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick.

The film “After The Storm” — co-produced by the EPA and the Weather Channel, and depicting the need to protect water resources — will be shown and discussed. Refreshments will be served, and open discussions will follow the film. For more information, call Partnership at (732) 249-5297.

Middlesex NAMI annual garage sale June 18

The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI), Middlesex, will hold its annual garage sale June 18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 316 Livingstone Ave., New Brunswick. This is the first time the sale will be held at this location. Donations may be dropped off Friday mornings at the sale location. For drop-off information, call Dorothy at (732) 846-9517. Senior Chai will offer luncheon, planting demo

The next meeting of Senior Chai, a program of Jewish Family Service (JFS) of Southern Middlesex County, will be held from 12:30-2 p.m. on June 21 at the East Brunswick Public Library, Jean Walling Civic Center. The event will feature a luncheon and a planting demonstration. Participants will take home a potted plant. Donation is $8, in advance.

North Brunswick fishing derby June 19

The North Brunswick Department of Parks, Recreation, & Community Services will hold its 29th annual Father’s Day fishing derby June 19 at Boyd Pond, North Brunswick. Registration will be from 11-11:30 a.m., and the derby 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

The New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife will stock the pond for the free event. North Brunswick children in preschool-eighth grade may take part in the derby, and anglers 14 and older do not need a New Jersey fishing license. Prizes will be awarded by age group for the largest fish (by length) as well as the most fish caught. Overall prizes will also be awarded. Call (732) 247-0922, ext. 475.

Register for ‘New Voices’ workshop by June 20

Registration ends June 20 for a free workshop offered by VSA arts of New Jersey (VSANJ), New Brunswick. The workshop will follow the three-act performance of “New Voices New Visions” July 9 at 2 p.m. at George Street Playhouse, 15 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick.

The workshop for students age 10-16 will end at approximately 5 p.m. Attendees will engage in hands-on theater activities using improvisation and theater games.

“New Voices” is three original one-act plays will be performed by members of The Unlimited Potential Theater Company of VSANJ. The group will also present staged rehearsals of the plays June 25 and 26 at 3 p.m. at the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home, 132 Evergreen Road, Edison.

The plays are “Retreat from Destruction,” “Express to Nowhere,” and “The Aftermath.” The theater was established to expand opportunities for young individuals and adults with physical disabilities to take part in the performing arts in New Jersey. ‘Empowering the Mind’ to begin June 23

South Brunswick Public Library and the Health Department will offer “Empowering the Mind, Body and Spirit: Building a Healthy Lifestyle for You and Your Child” June 23, and July 7, 14 and 21.

The free programs for parents and preschoolers will be at the South Brunswick Municipal Building, Ridge Road, Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick. Parents will attend the program, and children age 3-5 will attend storytime. Snacks will be served and door prizes distributed.

Youth ministry’s yard sale June 25

The teen youth ministry of St. Cecilia’s Church will hold a yard sale June 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the church at 10 Kingston Lane, Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick.

Proceeds will benefit the LifeTeen Youth day trip to Cologne, Germany, to see the pope. Any leftover items will be donated to Good Will on Route 18.

New Beginnings’ final summer meeting June 28

New Beginnings, a support group for parents and grandparents of children in interfaith relationships, will hold its final meeting of the summer June 28 at 7:30 p.m. at Congregation B’nai Tikvah, 1001 Finnegans Lane, North Brunswick. The next meeting will be in September.

The congregation recently installed its new board of directors and trustees for 2005-06, with Danny Greenberg serving as president. Vice presidents are Gary Bergman, Cindy Gittleman, Ruth Anne Koenick, Jeff Cadoff and Mark Sherman. Mark Kasdin will act as financial secretary and Marc Dillman as treasurer. Assistant treasurer is Frank Waltzer, while Bobbi Binder will act as recording secretary. Arie Behar is past president. Trustees are Larry Cohen, Harvey Finkelstein, Mitch Frumkin, Allison Nagelberg, Gary Warner, Paul Zankel, Arthur Biderman, Albert Garten, Linda Kohn and David Spivak.

Volunteers are sought

for rape crisis center

The Middlesex County Public Health Department’s Rape Crisis Intervention Center is seeking volunteers to provide support and advocacy to victims of sexual violence.

Interested individuals will take part in the center’s 50-hour Volunteer Advocate Training Program, which will train individuals in crisis intervention, advocacy and the dynamics of sexual violence and recovery.

Volunteer training sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays for seven weeks beginning July 11.

Upon completion of the program, volunteers will serve on call, on a rotating basis. Responsibilities will include offering support, information and referrals via the center’s 24-hour hotline to victims, others affected by sexual violence and members of the community at large. Volunteers also will accompany victims during collection of forensic evidence and throughout the legal process to offer information and support and to ensure that the victim’s rights are upheld.
