Community Bulletin Board Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post No. 9111, Kendall Park section of South Brunswick, will join the American Legion Post 401 to distribute approximately 700 American flags to be placed on the graves of veterans during Memorial Day ceremonies May 30. The flags were recently distributed by Joseph F. Ziemba, Middlesex County Supervisor of Veterans Interment, to local veterans groups to place on graves in cemeteries in South Brunswick and some surrounding township cemeteries where veterans are buried. In attendance during the flag distribution were Al Kady, Service Commander, and Victor Kovacs, Adjutant, of VFW Post No. 9111. Program on canals and railroads June 5 The annual meeting of the Delaware & Raritan (D&R) Canal Watch will be held June 5 at 3 p.m. at the Lawrence Municipal Building, 2207 Route 206. Bill McKelvey will give a talk on “Rails Along the D&R Canal,” discussing the relationship of two historic means of transportation — canals and railroads. He is an authority on canals and railroads in New Jersey. The talk is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served. Women Helping Women conducts a weekly Knitting Circle on Wednesdays, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the agency’s Somerset office, 7 Cedar Grove Lane, Somerset section of Franklin. Admission is free of charge. Participants should bring their own yarn and knitting needles. Women Helping Women serves more than 5,000 women, young children and teens each year with affordable counseling and support services. The agency’s programs are crucial to individuals struggling with issues related to domestic violence, sexual abuse, divorce, depression, loss, self-esteem, peer pressure, relationships and addiction. Villagers Theatre, a nonprofit center for the performing and cultural arts, will offer its production of the musical “Oliver!” by Lionel Bart at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays, June 3-26, on the theater’s main stage, 415 DeMott Ave., Somerset section of Franklin. The North Brunswick Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Services will sponsor the 26th annual Memorial Day 5K run/walk May 30 at the Hidden Lake area on Cozzens Lane. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Sabella Park (rain or shine), and the walk will start at 8:30 a.m. with the run at 8:45 a.m. The fee is $15 per person. A “Community Camp Out” will be held from 6:30 p.m. June 11 to 8 a.m. June 12 at Sabella Park. Activities include hayrides, crafts, games and a movie. Tickets are $5 each. The Father’s Day Fishing Derby will be held June 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Boyd Pond (rain or shine). Children from preschool through eighth grade are welcome to participate. Recreation is holding ongoing registration for several summer programs. Aquatics offers swimming lessons, birthday parties, Aquacise, swimmers clinic, open swim, and senior swim at North Brunswick Township High School. “Camp Journey” begins July 5 and will feature day trips for children completing grades six through eight. The Friends of the North Brunswick Library will hold its annual book sale June 4 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and June 5 from noon to 5 p.m. at the library, 880 Hermann Road (rain or shine). Tickets now available for ‘Chefs With Heart’ Tickets are now available for the American Heart Association’s (AHA) first “Chefs With Heart” fund-raiser to be held June 2 from 6-10 p.m. at the Tournament Players Club at Jasna Polana, Princeton. Tickets are $150 per person. The event will feature dishes from restaurants such as Frog and the Peach, New Brunswick; The Ryland Inn, Whitehouse; and Tre Piani Restaurant, Princeton. Also featured will be samplings of wines, liqueurs and microbrews; pastries; desserts; chocolates; and music by a four-piece jazz band.
