Resident wants traffic curtailed on Beekman Road My neighbors and I are very concerned about some of the proposed plans for Beekman Road and property accessed by Beekman Road. Township officials and the police have expressed concern about the intersection of Route 27 and Beekman Road. While I agree that this is a problem because of the amount of traffic that backs up at the light, and the danger posed because of the misalignment with the Franklin side of Beekman Road, I have no interest in making it easier for large trucks to turn onto Beekman Road. A group of residents appeared before the Township Council in May 2001 to ask for Beekman Road to be added to the list of township roads that banned large trucks. We left that meeting believing that our road would be added to the requested list. The council is considering a Park and Ride for 40 - 92 cars not far from that intersection. If officials are truly concerned about the traffic, why would they want to add commuters rushing down Beekman Road to the mix? We have two parks on Beekman-one is currently being improved and the other is still in progress. Going to the park to sit in the gazebo and enjoy the Sensory Garden doesn’t mix with trucks and additional traffic whizzing by. There does not seem to be a master plan in place for Beekman Road. The former Metroplex site on the other side of Beekman and Route 1 has potential to place thousands of homes or major office space on the property. The plans to make Beekman Road a four lane road appear to have been scrapped. No thought seems to have been given to the effect of the additional traffic that the parks, new homes and potential Park and Ride would have on our road. The only way to uphold the safety and integrity of our community is to be involved, ask questions and voice our concern. To that end, we hope a large group will join us at the next council meeting on June 15 at 7:30 at the Municipal Building. Speak now or lose our peace! Jodi Marcou Kendall Park |
