Republicans need to tell truth about motives

It is really insulting how the North Brunswick Republicans try to fool the people of North Brunswick into thinking they are against additional development when they accept thousands of dollars of campaign contributions from the largest residential developer.

In recent letters to the editor, Republican chairman Pete Maimone claims there were no stings attached to the more than $8,000 in political contributions they received from the Halpern-related development companies. In case anyone doesn’t know, it is this group that owns and runs the Georgetown, Oak Leaf Village and North Brunswick Manor Apartment complexes, in addition to being the ones who are rebuilding the entire Renaissance complex along Route 130. Does Mr. Maimone think he and his candidates were given this money just because they are nice guys? In fact, an even better question is how did Mr. Maimone and his candidates get in contact with Mr. Sam Halpern? Did they seek him out or did Mr. Halpern come to them?

What is even more troubling is that in addition to their new alliance with the largest residential developers in North Brunswick, Mr. Maimone — along with his candidates — are now proposing what could end up as another extensive residential development on the Johnson & Johnson property. In their rush to gain political points, they are now trying to force this concept of a transit village down our throats without having any backup information as to the effect on traffic, the environment, additional burden on our schools or any of the other things one must consider before allowing such as massive development to take place.

Did they also consider the fact that while Johnson & Johnson may be moving the manufacturing facility that now exists on its property elsewhere, that maybe we could convince Johnson & Johnson to bring one of its other numerous divisions or office complexes to this property instead? Why are Mr. Maimone, Mr. Gregg Rubenstein and Mr. Pat Melanson so anxious to bring in this transit village to North Brunswick without any regard to these facts. Do they already have a developer lined up for this property?

I think if messengers Maimone, Rubenstein and Melanson want the people of North Brunswick to vote for them, they should start by telling us the truth about their motives. From their actions to date it seems their real agenda is to continue the residential development craze in North Brunswick, only try to make us think that is someone else’s fault — for shame.
