CHARLES W. KIM Fitness trainer Angel Tortoriello shows client Bernadette Citarella how her shoulder muscles relate to her back at Tortoriello’s gym on Broadway Road in South Brunswick.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK — A local fitness trainer wants to help June brides get in shape for their big day.

"I want to help you get the body you want," Angel Tortoriello said in her Broadway Road gym.

Tortoriello, a personal trainer who owns Angel Fitness Therapy, announced that she is forming a Bridal Survival Camp that will offer ladies a 12-week program of physical training and proper eating habits to get them ready for their wedding day or other summertime activities.

"Muscle is what burns calories and works for you," Tortoriello said.

CHARLES W. KIM Trainer Angel Tortoriello looks at the work needed to prepare client Bernadette Citarella for wearing a formal gown this summer.

Many people are confused about dieting and end up depriving themselves of food, she said. According to Tortoriello, this deprivation leads to cheating and not much weight loss.

"You should eat supportive meals," she said.

Tortoriello said that by eating a lean meal approximately every three and a half hours, and exercising regularly, you can tone the muscle that you have and get rid of fat. She said the sedentary lifestyle that many people have leads to gaining weight.

"You are not challenging the muscle," she said.

The Bridal Survival Camp can be done inside the client’s home or at Tortoriello’s gym in South Brunswick. Under her program, clients can actually have a "cheat day."

"The more you crave it, the worse it is," she said.

Tortoriello examines a client’s medical history before starting a program with them.

"They have to sign a medical release," she said.

Some of the conditions that Tortoriello needs to be aware of include smoking, heart disease, high blood pressure, cholesterol and any injuries the client may have. These factors come into play when determining what kind of program the client should be on.

"My program will offer women a step-by-step program that will jump-start weight loss and fitness in 15 days," she said.

The program will include two sessions per week during the 12-week period, and clients will learn to understand how physical training and diet work together to keep them fit. The cost varies from client to client and is based on the amount of training needed.

Tortoriello is a certified personal trainer and has been working in the field for several years.

In addition to traditional methods, she also employs Muscle Activation Techniques, a licensed system to trace pain and muscle strain back to the origin point. The system shows how stimulus at one point on the body affects other areas.
