Summer needs are as critical as those of winter

Most people consider winter to be the harshest season, but you only have to ask a homeless person to find that summer bodes other hardships: those of soaring temperatures or incessant sun and no relief in sight.

On the other hand, those steamy, rainy days of June cause those who are homeless to become ill as their tattered clothes become soaked. Need knows no season.

For the needy of our communities lucky enough to have shelter, summer woes can be just as bad. Small, cramped apartments with little ventilation can become ovens in the dog days of summer. Children, adults and the elderly with health problems are greatly affected by the vagaries of summer heat. Need knows no season.

The Salvation Army knows all too well each season can have cruel moments — moments, days and weeks that affect the needy, the homeless and the elderly more than the general public. And the Salvation Army will do all it can to ease the hardships of these people.

The Salvation Army’s New Jersey division provides temporary shelter, clothing, food and much more to people in need, regardless of the season. The public’s generosity has always allowed The Salvation Army to continue its services and programs to those less fortunate. Please continue to help. As donations have declined these summer months, the need for help has escalated proportionately.

If you can contribute, even in a small way, or if you would like more information, please contact Tricia Pellegrini at our divisional headquarters at (908) 851-8227.

Thank you and God bless.

Maj. Stephen Banfield
