The Jersey Sting Girls’ 17-U basketball team won the AAU state championship with a 70-50 win over the Harrison Lady Patriots. The Colts Neck-based Sting knocked off the No. 1-seeded North Stars in the second round, 65-64, when Sam Hamill was fouled in the final second going in for a lay-up and sank both free throws to provide the one-point margin of victory.

The Sting then defeated the Jersey Gems, 43-40, before losing to the third-seeded Lady Patriots from Harrison, 68-63, in overtime to fall into the losers’ bracket. The ninth-seeded Sting bounced back with another convincing win over the top-seeded North Stars, 60-47, to advance to the semifinals, where, in a rematch, the Sting beat the Lady Patriots, 60-47. It was the first loss for Harrison in the double-elimination tournament, forcing a third and deciding game between the two teams for the state title.

The final was played at home, and the Sting took full advantage of it to beat the Lady Patriots by 20.

The Sting is a team of area varsity players, including Heather Domotor, junior guard at South Brunswick. Tim Cooper of Freehold is the head coach of the Sting assisted by Lad Rizman, Wall. This was the second AAU state title for the Colts Neck Basketball Club. Earlier, the Sting U10 team, coached by Don Hampton, was victorious.
