Community Bulletin Board programs begin Jan. 6 The South Brunswick YMCA will begin its winter programs Jan. 6. The facility is at 329 Culver Road, Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick. Featured programs include "supersports" for children age 2 1/2–5. Dance classes are available for 2-year-olds, and introduction to dance programs are available for children age 3-5. Full-day preschool programs are also offered for infants and children age eight weeks to 5 years. Preschool enrichment programs include reading and crafts, yoga, shapes and sounds, a "toddler club," and other activities. The "Mad Scientist Club" is available for school-age children, and the newly formed Leaders Club is available for teen-agers. Also offered by the YMCA are holiday and spring break camps, and a Feb. 15 "sleep-over" for children ages 5-12. Adult equipment includes strength training and cardiovascular machines, treadmills and free weights. Brunswick Christmas tree pickup Jan. 2-18 South Brunswick Department of Public Works will again pick up Christmas trees from Jan. 2-18 for recycling. (Trees placed out after Jan. 18 will be collected with the garbage and go to the landfill.) Trees must be free of adornment, tinsel, bags and metal items, including stands. Trees should be placed at the curb of single-family residences. Residents living in multi-family developments should place trees next to the most convenient Dumpster enclosure. Adult group to begin book discussions Jan. 7 The South Brunswick Library adult discussion group will host book discussions of several books next year, beginning with Emma by Jane Austen on Jan. 7. Ahab’s Wife by Sena Jeter Naslund is scheduled for Feb. 4. William Faulkner’s The Reivers will be the topic March 4, and the Good Earth by Peal Buck will be discussed April 1. The May 6 discussion will be on Samurai’s Garden by Gail Tsukiyama. John Adams by David McCullough will be discussed July 1. (There is no discussion in June.) VFW No. 9111 to host New Year’s Eve event Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9111 and its Women’s Auxiliary, South Brunswick, will host its annual New Year’s Eve Dinner-Dance Dec. 31 at 8 p.m. The event will be at the post home, 11 Henderson Road, Kendall Park section of South Brunswick. The cost is $45 per person, and the party will feature appetizers and a cocktail hour, hats and party favors, and music by the De Ja Vu Band. YMCA The South Brunswick Family YMCA has announced the creation of a Leaders’ Club for teen-agers to give teens a leadership experience while having fun. The group will meet Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8 p.m. for eight weeks beginning Jan. 3. The Y’s teen director will organize and plan activities for the club. Also added to the organization is a water-walking fitness program for adults to improve cardio-respiratory benefits, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition. The program is held Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1:15-2:15 p.m. Also new is an "Introduction to Quilting" course will run for eight weeks beginning Jan. 2; call for times. Registration for the YMCA’s eight-week winter programs begins Jan. 2. Children’s programs include "Winter Wonderland," games, and yoga. Sport programs include soccer, martial arts, swim lessons, and dance. A new gymnastics class will be offered for boys age 3 and older. Library to offer yoga, workshop, comedy event The South Brunswick Public Library will hold its next beginner/intermediate yoga sessions Jan. 3-Feb. 7. Sessions will be Thursday evenings, and fee is $30. Advance registration is required, and attendees are asked to wear loose clothing and bring an exercise mat. A series of financial management workshops will be held Jan. 9 and 23, Feb. 6 and 20, March 6 and 20, and April 3 and 10 at 7:30 p.m. The free workshop are sponsored by Merrill Lynch and feature topics such as college planning, credit management, and taxes. Registration is necessary. An afternoon of comedy featuring Stephen Franzman will be Jan. 20 at 3 p.m. Franzman is known as the "Clown Prince of Aging" and has performed locally at the South Brunswick Senior Center. Center to offer classes, Chinese New Year event The South Brunswick Senior Center will offer several classes in January, such as ballroom dancing Jan. 2; tai chi Jan. 3, country western dancing, painting, "Paint a T-shirt," and combo dancing Jan. 7; and "Healthy Bones" Jan. 8. Free lectures in January include "Petals and Poetry" on Jan. 10, and "Holistic Health for Beginners" on Jan. 17. Both lectures begin at 12:30 p.m. The center will hold a Chinese New Year celebration to welcome in the year of the horse Jan. 19 from noon-2:30 p.m. The event will include an authentic Chinese buffet, Chinese kung fu music and folk dancing, and entertainment provided by the Tzu Chi Foundation.
