August events at South Brunswick Senior Center

The South Brunswick Senior Center has announced its August events. "Friends Life Care at Home" will be on Aug. 17 at 12:45 p.m., and will try to show seniors that security and independence are within reach. A door prize will be offered. A barbecue is planned for Aug. 24, at noon, with outdoor game fun slated for 12:45 p.m. Music is provided by Billy Phillips, and refreshments will be served.

"Bring a Child to Lunch" day is set for Aug. 31 at 11 a.m. This will feature a craft project, as well as lunch with a grandchild or young friend; pizza is provided for children. Entertainment begins at 12:45 p.m. Reservations required. For more information, call (732) 329-4000, ext. 675.

‘Super Saturdays’ to be offered by senior center

The South Brunswick Senior Center (at the municipal complex) will offer the following "Super Saturdays" in August: Video exercise, and falun dafa (exercise/meditation), Aug. 5 and 19, 9 a.m.; movie, Mansfield Park, Aug. 5, 10 a.m.; and movie, Angela’s Ashes, Aug. 19, 10 a.m.

Coffee, billiards, cards, and other activities are offered throughout the day. The center’s hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Bridge classes for two intermediate levels will begin Aug. 2 at 10:15 a.m., with the advanced class at 12:30 p.m. On the fourth Wednesday of every month, there will be a game at 12:30 p.m. rather than a lesson.

The senior center is also offering the following trips during August: Quakerbridge Mall, Aug. 2, 10:30 a.m.; Rockingham Historic Site and lunch at the Tiger’s Tail, Aug. 9, 10:45 a.m.; Woodbridge Mall, Aug. 16, 10:30 a.m.; Flemington outlets, Aug. 23, 10:30 a.m.; and Hometown Buffet, Aug. 30, 10:30 a.m. The center provides food shopping at various stores at 12:45 p.m., Mondays and Fridays. ‘Before & After School’

opens registration

South Brunswick Community Education will offer its "Before and After School" program, beginning in September. The program is open to students from kindergarten to seventh grade. The "Before School" program starts as early as 7 a.m., and the "After School" program runs from the end of the school day until 6 p.m., a snack is provided.

Registration is $40 per family. Students whose registration is completed before Aug. 11 will begin the program on the first day of school. Registrations received after Aug. 11 will begin the program on Sept. 25.

Evening registration will be Aug. 8, 6-8 p.m. in the Community Education office in the Board of Education, 4 Executive Drive (off of Route 1 north). Regular office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration is complete when enrollment forms are complete, and fee and first month’s tuition is paid.

The program is available in all nine elementary schools. National accreditation from NSACA has been given to four of these schools, and others are working toward accreditation. Dance performance scheduled for library

The South Brunswick Public Library will welcome Ramya Ramnarayan of the Nrityanjali Institute of Dance to perform on Aug. 5, 2-3 p.m. The dance will be at the library at 110 Kingston Lane, the Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick.

Miller Memorial Church announces schedule

Miller Memorial Presbyterian Church will hold worship at 10 a.m. on July 30, with coffee hour following. On July 31, Boy Scout Troop 10 leaders will meet at the church at 7 p.m. The Church Elders will meet on Aug. 1 at 7:30 p.m.

During the week, the Youth Group teen-agers and advisers will prepare for their Lake George trip to be held in August. Miller Memorial Church is located at the corner of Ridge Road and New Road. For information about church programs and services, call (732) 329-6719.

AARP sponsors ‘55 Alive

Defensive Driver’ course

The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) is sponsoring a "55 Alive Defensive Driver" course Sept. 5-6, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (with a lunch break). Cost is $10, payable by check to AARP (in-class instruction only). The course will be at the South Brunswick Public Library on Monmouth Junction-Dayton Road.

Upon completion of the course, students receive a "Certificate of Completion," which entitles them to a 5 percent discount on the major portion of their automobile insurance premium for three years. Students must repeat the course every three years to remain eligible for the discount. Also, two points will be deducted from their motor vehicle record, if applicable.

Reformed Church offers Vacation Bible School

The Reformed Church of North Brunswick will hold its Vacation Bible School, Aug. 7-11, 9 a.m. to noon. The school is open to children age 3 to junior high and will be held at the church, 17 Laurel Place, next to Babbage Park off Cedar Avenue. There is no registration fee, and older children may be helpers.

The school’s theme is "In the Race With Jesus–Road Rally 2000," and the children’s closing musical and hot dog lunch will take place on Aug. 11. Parents and family members are welcome to attend.

Children may register by calling the church at (732) 545-2736 or 940-0257, or on the Aug. 7 before 9 a.m. An offering will be taken each morning at the opening session.

Participants sought for ‘Heritage Day Festival’

The North Brunswick Heritage Day Committee is seeking craft, food, activity and business participants for the 18th annual Heritage Day Festival, Sept. 16 (rain date, Sept. 23). The township-sponsored festival is a fall tradition at the North Brunswick Township High School.

Mayor to make monthly radio appearances

North Brunswick Mayor David Spaulding will make monthly appearances on 1450/WCTC’s morning show hosted by Bernard Spigner. He will appear on the third Monday of each month at 10:30 a.m., except in the case of scheduling conflicts.

Spaulding has appeared on the show several times, to positive response, according to the mayor. "This is another opportunity for the public to gain access to, and communicate with me," commented Spaulding. "Residents have the opportunity to call in, express their opinions, ask questions, and create dialogue. I’m pleased with the way the shows have gone and look forward to the continuation."

Rutgers Gardens will

hold July 29 open house

The 36th annual Rutgers Gardens Open House will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 29 (rain or shine) at the gardens, east of the Route 1 and Ryders Lane interchange, North Brunswick.

Highlights will include tours of the Donald B. Lacey Display Garden, gardening lectures and programs, an "Ask the Expert" clinic, "What’s New in Rutgers Gardens?" tours, landscape plant sales, a butterfly release and special children’s activities. Food may be purchased for a light lunch and snacks.

Admission is free of charge. Voluntary parking donations will be accepted to support the gardens. For more information, call (732) 932-8451.
